When it comes to chocolate, I peel that wrapper back and finish the bar in a matter of seconds (I mean who doesn’t?). But after enjoying those heavenly few seconds of chocolate overload, I immediately begin to have regrets. “What if it’s going to catch up to me?” I say to myself. “Isn’t chocolate bad for you?” “What about my weight!?”.
For all of you who had those same exact thoughts after scarfing down your favorite treat, panic no more. Here you will know exactly why gorging on chocolate might actually help your health. Doesn’t THAT put a smile on your face?
Chocolate Prevents Cancer!
Chocolate comes from cocoa, which contains a compound called pentamer, that actually disrupts cancer cells from multiplying. Researchers at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University began to treat patients with the compound found in chocolate, which successfully slowed the growth of cancer cells.
Chocolate Reduces Risk of Heart Attack!
Heart attacks occur when blood platelets stick together and begin a blood clot. Studies show that eating chocolate will help prevent blood platelets from clumping together at a fast rate. This is great news, but it doesn't mean we should skip on regular exercise and a healthy diet.
Prevents Pregnancy Complications!
Studies show that a chemical called theobromine, found in dark chocolate, may reduce the chances of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia raises the blood pressure in pregnant women, which chocolate could help alleviate.
Chocolate May Make You Skinny!
Studies have shown that people who consume chocolate frequently have a lower BMI than those who eat chocolate less regularly. How is this possible? Although those who eat chocolate more frequently are consuming more calories, the studies suggest that whatever is in chocolate may make the calories you eat less likely to be turned into fat. But of course, this is all just an association with no concrete proof, but one can dream!
If you’re sick and coughing up a lung, you might want to try chocolate! The chemical compound in chocolate, theobromine, reduces the activity in part of the brain that triggers coughs. A company in the United Kingdom is working on cough medicine that had theobromine as the main ingredient instead of the narcotic, codeine. Thousands of people suffer from persistent coughs, and this may be a delicious solution.
Note: The list is based on dark chocolate, as milk chocolate may have most of its health benefits removed.
